and serious dirt riding.
Freestyle
Small sturdy bike similar to the BMX with the addition of foot
pegs, platforms, and other places to stand. Usually equipt with a
front detangler to allow the handlebars to spin freely without
tangling the brake cables
Mountain
Preferred term for bicycles made for off road use. They
usually have knobby tires, flat handlebars, and a racing profile
with the handlebar height lower than the seat height
Comfort
Mountain bike adapteed for casual ring with a larger, more
comfortable seat, riser bars, and usually a shorter top tube to
allow a more upright seating position
Touring
Designed for comfort, durabilit, efficiency, and load
capacity. Mainly for long distance trips, has braze-ons for racks
and panniers. Usually with drop handlebars.
Road
Sport bicycle with drop handlebars and narrow tires, usually
used for road racing.
Hybrid
Cross between a mountain bike and a touring bike. It looks
somewhat like a road bike with mountain bike handlebars, wider
tires, and a wider seat. They are ideally suited for city use and
hardpacked trails
Recumbent
The rider assumes a more or less horizontal position usually
reclined with the feet forward, potentially more aerodynamic than
the conventional bike, but more complicated mechanically. Very
comfortable quite often adapted for long distance riding
